Are Brown Eggs Superior to White Eggs? Let’s Uncover the Truth.
The world needs a little Egg-ucation! We get it. Before raising hens, we were clueless about them, accepting every common belief. But now, we have some first-hand knowledge. Let’s answer this question!
At our farm, our assorted hens lay eggs in all colors: white, cream, olive, blue, light brown, dark brown. The color is determined by the breed of hen. Leghorns produce white eggs; Ameraucanas produce blue and so on. It’s a bit like eye color.
So what’s the fuss? The common belief that white eggs are inferior comes from the fact that Leghorns (white layers) are really consistent, dependable layers and commercial egg producer companies obviously choose them as their #1 breed for no other reason than “it’s all about money”. And everyone knows how these poor Ladies live. Seeing neither daylight nor dirt; without question, producing inferior eggs.
While on a road trip last year, we passed a semi-truck loaded with hens squashed in crates. The children gasped, “Are those chickens?” This treatment of hens is a little different than the treatment us backyard farmers give our animals. Considering that we name our hens and treat them like pets, the kids were horrified.
Our hens…Floppy (a Leghorn), Little Red (a Rhode Island Red), Beauty (an Ameraucana) & the rest live side by side - same coop, same dirt, same bugs, same yard. One egg is just as healthy as another here.
Bottom Line: choose your eggs NOT by the color but by the environment in which they are raised!
Truth told :)
